It’s important to keep your floor tiles clean for hygiene and to keep them in good condition. If dirt and mold is left to grow, tiles may wear down more quickly and become costly to repair or replace. Tile grout also needs a little attention. If not cleaned, it starts to darken as it absorbs dirt, making the floor look permanently dirty. With this in mind, let’s take a look how to get tiles clean, fresh and sparkling.
How to Clean Ceramic Floor Tiles
Ceramic tiles are usually found in the bathroom and kitchen. Because these are high traffic rooms, they may need a good scrub to get shining again. But if cleaned regularly, dirt and stains should be kept at a minimum. First remove all rugs and furniture and follow this guide:
- Eliminate sand, dirt particles and other debris with a good vacuum
- Use a putty knife to gently loosen any dried spills
- Mix together hot water, half a tablespoon of dish soap and half a cup of vinegar
- Mop the floor with the mixture and follow with clean water
- Wipe over with a clean, dry towel and allow to air dry
How to Clean Natural Stone Floor Tiles
Natural stone floors look beautiful and need special care to keep them looking great. Make sure you dust mop your stone floors frequently and protect high traffic areas with a rug or non-slip mat. Wipe up any spillages immediately to prevent damage. Follow these steps to clean your stone floor:
- Use a clean microfibre mop to pick up any dirt and debris
- Change the mop pad and dip your clean pad into a bucket of hot water with appropriate floor cleaner
- Wipe the damp pad over your stone floor to pick up any stains
- Rinse out the mop pad often and change if it gets really dirty
- Do a final mop with clean, warm water
- Open windows to let your stone floor air dry. Don’t put rugs back until the stone is dry
How to Clean Tile Grout on Floors
If dirt and grime is left to build up on grout, mold and mildew may form which releases spores into the room. This of course is not good for the health and can particularly effect people with asthma. Tackle grout on your floor tiles with this method:
- Wear rubber gloves and mix one cup of baking soda with one cup of peroxide
- Use an old toothbrush to apply the solution to your grout or use a spray bottle
- Spend time scrubbing the solution into the grout with the toothbrush
- Rinse with warm water
